On the evening of March 20, 1981, Ku Klux Klan members Henry Hays and James Llewellyn Knowles kidnapped Michael Donald while he was on his way home. The members were enraged after a Klan meeting after the mistrial of an African American charged with the murder of a white policeman. At the meeting, Bennie Hays(Henry’s father) said “If a black man can get away with killing a white man, we ought to be able to get away with killing a black man”. The meeting inspired the two young men to drive around on a search for a victim. After kidnapping Donald, they traveled to a secluded, wooded area where they beat him with a wooden branch, hanged him, and finally slit his throat to ensure that he was dead. They then tossed the body into the back of their car, drove home, and hung the body from a tree across the street from the Hays’ residence. The murder was immediately connected to drug related violence before protests conducted by Jesse Jackson and the victim’s mother lead to the involvement of the FBI. Two and a half years after the murder, Hays and Knowles were arrested. Hays was sentenced to death and executed in the electric chair in what is know as the first execution for a white-on-black crime since 1913. Knowles was sentenced to life imprisonment. Donald’s murder has been considered one of the last recorded lynchings in the United States.
I love this!<3
We live in a world where, no one cares about anything other than themselves. Where everyone is out to pleasure themselves, where selfishness and greed are what runs society. Where a man would kill for a flag, for an idea of what the flag represents, kill another man who his land is what he defends. Kill for a society, that all is concerned with is: money and promiscuity, Success on the basis of economic recompensation or some sort of social acknowledgment. Our society values, seizing the day but in reality all they do is live it for empty pleasure, seizing the day has always been to me something meaningful, not a skin deep “feels good” for a second thing.
